By feeding children junk food we are storing up major health problems for the future.

Bad eating habits often begin in childhood. Children are surrounded by sugar and refined foods. Sugary foods to keep them quiet at home, in shops, when travelling, sugar to praise them. Sugary snacks after school, in school dinner boxes and pastries after school lunches.

Vast consumption of sugar interferes with their mood, rendering them irritable, moody, depressed, hyperactive and tired. So consequently they want more sugar. Sugar is addictive and contributes to many health problems.

High intake of sugar has a negative overall effect on a child's health. Upsets their intestinal bacteria and causes dental decay. Let's not mention the increasing issue of obesity in our society, particularly among children.

Juices with labels 'no added sugar' are rich in fructose that has the same effect on dental decay as sugar. Alternatively add raisins and dried fruit to cereals and avoid sugary cereals. Make your own fruit juices from fresh fruit and dilute them with water. It is preferable to make your own pastries and biscuits using wholemeal flour and reduced sugar for parties and treats.

Denying children of sugar is not the answer either. It is about balance and being aware of the health future consequences of your child. It is taking responsibility for their health and wellbeing by being informed.

We live in a fast paced society where ready made meals, fast food and sugary snacks are easily available. On the run we tend to forget the importance good, nutritious food plays in our health, happiness and well-being.

Some additives in food may be necessary as preservatives, but most are simply colouring to make food attractive. For example E102, or tartrazine, has been linked to hyperactivity and is banned in some parts of the world. Additives often dilute the nutritional value of food. High intake of salt can also cause serious health problems for children.
