"Ever since I found out I was pregnant, my skin has been awful. My face is covered in spots, and they're even spreading to my back and shoulders. I thought I was supposed to bloom, but I can't bear to look at myself in the mirror. What can I do?"

Kerry Somerford, 27, from Harrogate, 24 weeks

Many conventional treatments for acne are either harmful in pregnancy, or too harsh for pregnant skin, which is more prone to dryness than usual. It's better, therefore, to use products of natural origin.

Tea tree essential oil is safe to use topically, as is myrrh essential oil, and creams containing chamomile, marigold, cat's claw and geranium extract. These reduce inflammation and protect against infection. Cleansers containing apricot, cucumber, ginseng, green tea and gingko are good for deep pore cleansing. These can be used in conjunction with astringents such as witch hazel, citrus seed extracts and calendula, to help remove excess facial oil. Face masks containing seaweed extracts and bentonite clay will draw oils and toxins from the skin.

Drinking plenty of water and eating lots of fruit and vegetables is beneficial for your skin. Research also suggests that nutrients such as zinc and selenium are lower in people with acne, but always consult your doctor or a qualified nutritionist before taking supplements.

Acne in pregnancy is rarely triggered by diet, but your gut flora may be altered when you're expecting, which is linked to acne. Taking a probiotic or, better still, eating lots of green leafy vegetables, which are rich in vitamin K, will help boost your gut flora, which can improve your overall wellbeing, including your skin.
